Things are now much worse, not only for the Church in Ephesus, but for all Christians everywhere! They are being persecuted by the cruel and sadistic emperor, Nero, and Paul himself has been imprisoned in Rome and has been sentenced to death for sedition. Worse yet, the people Paul counted on for help and moral support have abandoned him. The "Good News" seems to have become very, very bad! To many, the situation seems to proclaim the end of the world!

Timothy is understandably grief stricken and disillusioned. His concern for his mentor and beloved friend's predicament has begun to tell on his enthusiasm for his ministry, especially in view of the fact that his depression is now being shared by many in his congregation. What can he say to uplift their spirits, to convince them that their belief in salvation and the resurrection is not in vain?

How many of us throughout history have felt the same kinds frustration and pain when faced with hopeless situations, and how many of us can benefit from Paul's reply!
