Come Forth, Lazarus

John 11:1-44

Jesus was busy preachin'.
Savin' all the sinners from hell,
When some of his friends came to him and said,
"Lord, Lazarus ain't feelin' well.
We got a letter from Martha and Mary,
Way down Bethany way.
They asked if you could come see about him,
And maybe stay a couple of days."
(and just say...)
"Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin."
Well, Jesus said, "I'd surely love to,
And in a few days I will.
But I can't leave these people alone
Just because their brother is ill!
You tell Martha and Mary
I'll be there after a spell.
Oh, and tell them not to worry, because
Lazarus is gonna get well!"
(I'll just say...)
"Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin."
Well, just a few days later,
The disciples said, "You better come quick!
We got another letter from Bethany,
And Lazarus is awful sick!
We know that you can cure him;
It's the kind of thing that you do.
Lazarus is just about your bestest friend,
And you know he's countin' on you."
(to just say...)
"Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin."
The disciples finished packin';
They were ready to leave about five.
They said "We'd better get a move on, Lord,
If Lazarus is gonna survive.
We know you could help him,
Just like that blind man before.
But if we don't get there pretty soon,
Lazarus won't be there any more."
(You just say...)
"Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin."
Well, when they saw them comin',
The women just hung their heads.
They said, "Lord, you're four days late,
Our brother is already dead."
But Jesus said, "Don't you worry,
Don't let his death trouble you.
I said Lazarus is gonna get well,
And that's what he's gonna do!"
(I'll just say...)
"Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin."
Well, all the folks were astonished!
They didn't know what to think!
His sister said, "He's four days dead!
By now he's beginnin' to stink!"
But Jesus had them roll back
The stone at the place he was laid.
He called to him outside that door,
And this is what he said,
(He hollered...)
"Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin."
Then came a funny rumblin'
Way down deep in the ground.
And Lazarus just came hoppin' out,
Still tied up, gagged and bound.
Jesus said, "Get him some supper.
Take care of him and don't you grieve.
You see, things usually turn out pretty well,
If you'll just do good and believe!"
(...and just say...)
"Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin."
Well, the moral of this story
Is just what Jesus Christ said.
God's friends don't have to worry about nuthin',
And that includes bein' dead!
If we're good and kind to each other,
And do our best every day,
Some day when we're all dead and gone,
We'll hear a familiar voice say...
(He'll just say...)
"Come forth, [your name here]
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin!"
Come forth, Lazarus!
Come out of there, my friend.
Get on your feet; get somethin' to eat.
Your new life's about to begin!
